According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, compared to the general population, law enforcement report much higher rates of depression, PTSD, burnout, and other anxiety related mental health conditions.

There were 174 officer suicides in 2020, making officers more likely to die from suicide than in the line of duty — even as shootings of officers increase. From April 2020 to April 2021, officer retirements increased 45 percent, a trend that shows no sign of abating.

According to a  First Responder Mental Health Survey approximately n9 out of 10 first responders will be exposed to a traumatic event in their career, and according to Substance Abuse and Mental Health administration around 1 in 3 of them will develop post-traumatic stress disorder.
